Running in Chicago: A Calendar of Events

For all you runners out there looking for a race in the Chicago area, the Windy City’s got some good ones coming up during the second half of the summer.  Check out the calendar below, sign yourself up, and dang it, go run for fun.  I’m already planning on it.

Miles for Melanoma—Sunday, July 10, 2016—Chicago, Illinois

Those of you looking for a running event this weekend, then Miles for Melanoma is your ticket. The funds raised at this 5K run/walk will help support skin cancer research at the Melanoma Research Foundation in Washington, DC.

This event will be held at Montrose Harbor, 601 West Montrose Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. Check-in and race-day registration begins at 7:00 am, with the run/walk following at 8:30. For those of you looking at registering prior to the race, early-bird registration ends Friday, July 8, 2016, at 5:00 pm. You can choose between a $30 competitive (timed) run or a free noncompetitive (not timed) race. If you register for the event after 5:00 pm on Friday, those competitive and noncompetitive racers will be charged $55 and $25, respectively.

Come on out for a good time supporting a good cause.

Hemingway 8K Running of the Bulls—Saturday, July 16, 2016—Oak Park, Illinois

All you fans of Ernest Hemingway can head out to Oak Park for an 8K run on Saturday, July 16. This race, presented by the Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park, supports the Dance in the Parks and the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry.

The 8K run costs $45.00 and will be held on the other side of Ontario Street next to Scoville Park. Check-in begins at 6:30 am, followed by the race line-up at 7:30 and the start of the run at 7:45. An awards ceremony will be held after the race at 9:15 am.

The run isn’t just for the adults. For the kids ages 3+, the Kids Running of the Bulls event will take place from 9:00-11:00 am in Scoville Park. Children can decorate their own cardboard “bull” and take it for a run from the Scoville Park World War I Memorial and back. The event is free, though there is a suggested donation of $5.00.

Glo Run—Saturday, July 16, 2016—Chicago, Illinois

Are you runners ready to “Glo?” This 5K run/walk takes place at Soldier Field in downtown Chicago at the intersection of Museum Campus Drive and East Waldron Drive. All monies raised will benefit the national non-profit organization, Back on My Feet Chicago.

Last-minute registration runs from 7:25 pm to 8:25 pm, with the race itself beginning at 8:55 pm.

The cost for you runners wishing to run without a timer is $60.00; this includes the 5K, race-day T-shirt, Super Glo necklaces, and admission to the Finish Line Party. A chip-timed run costs you $66.99 and includes the 5K, a Finisher’s Medal, race-day T-shirt, flashlight, Super Glo Necklaces, and admission to the Finish Line Party.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicago—Friday, July 15, 2016 through Sunday, July 17, 2016—Chicago, Illinois

The Rock ‘n’ Marathon Series is coming to Chicago! As part of a three-day Rock ‘n’ Roll weekend, there will be three running events held for anyone to enjoy. A 5K run will take place on July 16, while a 10K run and a half-marathon will take place on Sunday, July 17. All funds raised will go directly to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The 5K run begins at 7:30 am on Saturday, July 16, at the intersection of the Lakefront Trail and East Monroe Street, near Millennium Park behind the Art Institute of Chicago. As far as fees go, through Sunday, July 10, early registration for the race costs $50.00. Race-day registration costs $55.00.

The 10K run begins at 6:30 am on Sunday, July 17, at Grant Park, at the intersection of South Columbus Drive and East Congress Parkway. Through Sunday, July 10, early registration costs $60.00. After that date, the run will cost $65.00.

The half-marathon also takes place on Sunday, July 17, at Grant Park, at the intersection of South Columbus Drive and East Jackson Drive. The race begins at 6:30 am. Through Sunday, July 10, registration for the run costs $105.00. After that date, the price increases to $150.00.

PAWS Chicago 5K Walk/Run—Sunday, July 24, 2016—Chicago, Illinois

Bring your pets! Bring your kids! Support your furry friends at the PAWS Chicago5K Run/Walk on Sunday, July 24, 2016 at Montrose Harbor Grove-16 in Buena Park, 601 West Montrose Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. All the funds raised will go directly to PAWS Chicago to help save homeless, sick, and injured animals.

This event opens at 7:30 am and closes at noon. The 5K run starts up at 9:00 am, while the 5K walk begins shortly after at 9:15.

As far as prices go, if you register before race day, children 12 years and under cost $20.00. If you sign up the day of the event, kids will cost $30.00.

The standard adult registration fee prior to the event is $60.00. On race day, the price increases to $65.00.

Now, to become an Automatic Lifesaver or an Automatic Hero, you have the choice of either raising the funds to participate in the event or paying the entire fee without fundraising. The price to become an Automatic Lifesaver is $125.00 (this applies to early and race-day registration.) The same goes for becoming an Automatic Hero; the price for early and race-day registration costs $250.00.

**A note for those looking to register the day of the event: Race-day registration will only be available if the event has not sold out in advance.

Chicago 10K Run/Walk—Sunday, August 7, 2016—Chicago, Illinois

Come on out for chance to support an amazing event. All proceeds raised from the Chicago 10K Run/Walk will go directly to Special Olympics Chicago.

The race begins at 8:00 am at Arvey Field in Grant Park, near the intersection at South Columbus Drive and East Roosevelt Road, though it is suggested that event participants arrive at least 45 minutes early to check in for the run/walk.

Through Thursday, July 21, the race costs $55.00. Friday, July 22 through Monday, August 1, the price increases to $60.00.
